Antibacterial Potential of Nitrobacter Species against Staphylococcus aureus

JN Shrivastava, JP Shukla and Vinay Kumar

Nitrobacter species was identified as potent inhibitor of S. aureus, a human pathogen, causing staphylococcal food poisoning, localized abscesses, boils, morbidity and mortality in immuno-compromised patients. Antibacterial potential of Nitrobacter has been evaluated by measuring the diameter of zone of inhibition in Paper Disc Diffusion Method and Agar Well Diffusion Method. Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the bacterial extract was also measured. Even a small amount of bacterial extract (1μg/ml) has been found to be the inhibitor, which toxic the growth of S. aureus. Thus, bioactive constituent of Nitrobacter would be used as an antibiotic for S. aureus.
