Survival of Enteromorpha minima Under Different Stress Conditions.

Enteromorpha minima Neag. (Chlorophyta) parenchymatous thalluses were collected while growing attached to rocks at the bank of the river Yamuna at Allahabad. The alga survived for more than 4 months when cultured in liquid Bold’s basal medium at 22 ± 1 0C temperature and 40 μmol m-2 s-1 of white light intensity for 16 h per day in a culture chamber. The alga lost survival and die earlier when cultured under physical or physiological water stress (2 to 6 % agarized solid media or 0.2 to 0.8 mol/L NaCl- containing liquid media, respectively), visible light stress (0, 2 or 10 μmol m-2 s-1 of light intensity) or following dry storage in desiccators (for 10 to 60 min at 30- 33 % relative humidity), heat stress (of 40 0C for 15 min) or UV- C stress (of 0.96- 5.76 kJ/ m2). No stress condition induced any reproduction in the alga.
